As hotels try to set themselves apart, a new amenity is emerging: The hypoallergenic guest room. The concept of hypoallergenic rooms isn't just aimed at allergy sufferers but also at guests who are concerned about cleanliness and who ask "who slept in this bed last night?"

Currently the standard method of creating a hypoallergenic guest room involves the use of chemical sprays, disinfectants and adding protective coverings to mattresses.

There are a number of problems with these methods...sprays only clean the surfaces and don't attack the problem from where the germs and bacteria live (inside mattresses, carpeting and furnishings). Mattress covers only place a barrier between you and the dust mites and are only effective if they are placed over a new mattress or a mattress that has been thoroughly cleaned. Placing a dust cover over a dirty mattress can actually create an incubator for dust mites, germs and bacteria and thus create more problems than they solve.
